Supporting Community Beautification
The City of Petersburg was approved for up to $5,000 in matching funds to replace its seasonal Main Street Christmas lighting with new, energy-efficient LED lights. The project will update lighting on 15 Main Street light poles, helping create a brighter and more inviting downtown for residents and visitors.
Nelson County 4-H was also approved for up to $5,000 in matching funds toward a new storage shed at Stump Lake Village. The facility will provide much-needed space for livestock panels, cages, and other 4-H equipment, supporting youth activities and events for years to come.
Growing Communities, Creating Opportunities
The Nelson County Job Development Authority (NCJDA) is continuing to invest in the people, businesses, and communities that make Nelson County a great place to live, work, and grow!
At its August meeting in Tolna, the NCJDA board approved funding for two exciting community projects while continuing conversations on several other initiatives that could have a lasting impact across the county.
Building a Stronger Nelson County
NCJDA’s broader 2026 efforts are making an impact throughout the county. Recent accomplishments include:
-
Two housing rehabilitation projects completed in Tolna and Lakota.
-
New SparkBuild homes underway in Michigan and Lakota.
-
Four new apprenticeships established, connecting local employers with emerging talent.
-
A virtual job fair generated at least five applicants for Nelson County employers.
-
Local businesses continue to receive support through Flex PACE loans and grocery-store funding.
-
Michigan received $1,500 for emergency services equipment.
Investing in the Future
The NCJDA is also strengthening its Beautification Initiative Grants program, which provides communities with resources to improve public spaces and encourage downtown revitalization. The board is considering updates that would expand eligible projects to include demolition of dilapidated buildings and streamline program requirements.
In addition, the NCJDA approved an agreement to support advertising and social media for Nelson County Health Systems’ Scrubs Camp, helping introduce students to exciting health care career opportunities.
From downtown improvements and youth programs to housing, workforce development, emergency services, and business investment, the NCJDA is helping turn local ideas into meaningful opportunities across Nelson County.
The next NCJDA meeting will be held October 14, 2026, at the Aneta Senior Center in Aneta.

Exploring Major Community Investments
The board also heard a proposal from the Dahlen Fire Department for a new fire hall and community meeting space. With an estimated project cost of more than $231,000, the proposed facility would support emergency response while continuing the fire hall’s role as a gathering place for the community. The board will continue discussions as additional information is gathered.
