Red River Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO) was recently accepted into the One Rural program. One Rural is a national capacity-building and technical assistance program exclusively for housing and community development organizations in rural communities.
The three-year program is organized by the Housing Assistance Council (HAC), a national organization focused on the needs of rural communities. HAC offers a wide array of resources, including rural data, research, technical assistance, and lending, and works on national policy issues affecting rural communities and people.
Participation in One Rural provides an opportunity to connect with a cohort of peers from across the country, attend national conferences, and receive one-on-one coaching from a seasoned professional.
We are excited to begin this journey with One Rural and look forward to strengthening our organization and creating more housing opportunities throughout our region.

In order for your housing to be considered “affordable,” your monthly housing payment should not exceed 30% of your gross monthly income. What is included in your monthly payment? For renters, that means rent plus utilities. For homeowners, your monthly payment includes principal, interest, taxes, and insurance. If you must pay for private mortgage insurance (PMI) or flood insurance, those costs should also be included in that 30%.
People who pay more than 30% of their gross monthly income for housing are considered “cost-burdened.” Our 2024 Regional Housing Study found that approximately 43% of renters across Region 4 were considered cost-burdened, including nearly 1,330 seniors.
